The World Movement for Democracy is a global network of democrats, including activists, practitioners, academics, policy makers, and funders, who have come together to cooperate in the promotion of democracy. Leading up to its biannual international assembly of democrats in Indonesia, World Movement leaders needed a new Web site that better highlighted actions visitors could take on behalf of democracy and human rights. So they called Hairpin Communications.

Hairpin zeroed in on the tangible things people could do, from signing up for the World Movement newsletter to writing a letter on behalf of a jailed activist. Then we grouped them into three categories: Learn, Connect and Take Action. The result is a site that from the get go guides users to action.

We also introduced new elements to keep the home page from appearing static, such as a headline feed from the Democracy Digest blog, an easy-to-update news block, and auto-rotating images to convey the organization's purpose.

Beyond the home page, we reorganized the entire structure of the content to eliminate redundancy and flatten the hierarchy of the site map. A Drupal-based content management system allows the World Movement staff to make updates on their own, keeping costs in check.
