The National Endowment for Democracy is a private, nonprofit foundation dedicated to the growth and strengthening of democratic institutions around the world. Each year, with funding from the U.S. Congress, NED supports more than 1,000 projects of non-governmental groups abroad who are working for democratic goals in more than 90 countries.

In redesigning NED's Web site, Hairpin realized from the start that NED’s story is really the collected stories of its grantees, who work tirelessly for freedom around the world and often at great danger to themselves. Hairpin created a site that pushed them to forefront. We produced short videos shot via Internet Web cams and presented them as “Democracy Stories,” an ongoing series. We created a custom Flash map of the world with links to the regions where NED is active, to visually communicate the organization’s global impact. We reorganized the vast amount of data in a more intuitive, flattened structure, making navigation a snap.
